My Grandfather worked on B-29s. He was a mechanic so he didn’t fly em, but I don’t think he would want to. According to him the engines often caught fire after overheating, and that was a big problem.

It’s good to see “FIFI” back in the air on the airshow circuit with her new hybrid engines.

This is great. My grandfather, Maj. Gen Haywood “Possum” Hansell, flew the first squadron of B-29s into the newly built landing strip on Saipan. From there he commanded the squadrons of B-29s that dropped bombs on Japan. Unfortunately he used his tactics of strategic bombing that worked in Europe (eventually) but failed over Japan. High altitude daylight bombing did not work over Japan due to the extreme jet stream conditions. So Gen LeMay was brought in to fire bomb Japan and that worked.

There are several other flight-worthy airframes still though. Although they’ll never take it out, Bockscar is probably in the best condition at this point.

I always had eyes for the Lancaster, Spitfire, Mustang. But wow i would of been a kid in a candy store to see that … there’s only 2 Lancasters flying in the world today and the city next to me has the Canadian model She flys over head now and then and you can tell just by her engines I would love to see 2 of the best bombers fly over one day

Too bad hundred of B-29s were used for target practice at China lake. It would have been nice to have a couple more B-29s restored to flying condition.

What a wonderful video and great retirement gift for your dad. I grew up watching 12 O’Clock High on t.v. with Robert Lansing, which was of course B-17s, but was always interested in its bigger offspring, the Super Fortress. Some people may not know but the B-29 was the biggest project of WWII–yes, even eclipsing the amount spent on the Manhattan Project. Fans of this bird should order Building the B-29 by Jacob Vander Muelen, published in 1995.
